Last week we ventured up to Koyasan for Kobodaishi's B-day. Kobodaishi basically founded Koyasan; more specifically the Buddist school in Koyasan. He is buried there and the people celebrate him. For his b-day the town has a small parade that includes some amazingly lit floats. Pictured above is us with some old women. We walked up for the photo and jokingly hooked onto them like we knew them. They loved it and in fact the one to the right of Rich ran up and grabbed him once she realized that we were posing for a photo with the other women. Crazy!

OK, Rich owns this jacket that says "Akibake". He bought it here in Iwade. Well come to find out, akiba...nani nani is an electronics, manga, "dork" district in Tokyo. Akibake is a group classification name. If you are akibake, you are sort of a geek that's into computers, anime, manga, and you either stay in the house all day playing on the internet or video games or you go to weird manga cafes (the waitresses dress up in character). He likes the jacket and everytime he wears it people giggle and point at him (more than usual). They think it's funny that he would say he is akibake because he is gaijin. The boy on the right in the photo above came up to Rich and was very excited to proclaim that he also was akibake. He wanted a photo with Rich. That guy truly needs an akibake jacket b/c he is the real deal.

ReplyDeleteYes they were. It was wire like with paper around it. Pretty neat. Wish that they had more than 4, but the town itself isn't very big. I'm sure that those 4 floats cost them quite a bit.
