Obon is a Buddhist event held in August. During the three day obon period, Japanese families pay respect and in essence welcome back their ancestors. They clean the family graves and make offerings to the dead. It actually becomes sort of like a family reunion. People travel all over Japan and return to their homes for obon. here. This year for the start of obon, we went to
Koyasan. They have a huge candle festival in the cemetery. Pictured above is me, Rich, Hannah, Kaori, Jan, Simon (Lara's cool friend), and Lara the Uchita newbie.
The event at Okunoin is pretty amazing. Okunoin is about 2 Km long and has very famous and amazing graves. Basically all along the path people light candles to welcome home the dead. Little girl scouts hand out candles for free. The cemetery takes on an amazing glow. At the end of the path is Torodo Temple. There was a big ceremony with chanting, incense, etc happening when we went.

ReplyDeleteUm....NO! Guess I'm just looking a bit hefty in my photos. No baby on the way and not one planned for the immediate future. Kind of curious why "anonymous" just couldn't identify themself and ask. Interesting to know that my name is circulating on the grape vine.
